Nehalem Pacific's newest suite of products belongs to a style of crating called "wirebound". These crates are extremely strong and durable because the crate is bound together with 2-3 millimeter thick, zinc galvanized steel binding wire instead of traditional fasteners such as staples, nails, clamps or screws.
The high tensile strength binding wire is fastened into place by staples, using a unique, high speed stitching head technology. The staple wire is pulled from large coils and fed into the stitching heads, at which point the wire is formed into staples, cut and then shot into the wood substrate at high speeds. The machine's ability to manufacture its own staples, in-process, not only allows Nehalem Pacific to control staple quality and consistency, but it also dramatically increases production efficiency as there is no need to re-load staple cartridges. Thus, the wirebound production line is a truly continuous process.
Nehalem Pacific's wirebound production line is an imported retrofitted servomotor based production line which can manufacture roughly 5,000 small to medium sized crates per shift per line). These production lines resemble large sewing machines and produce consistent quality every time with extremely low labor input costs.
Wirebound crates are amazingly strong. Our small M2A1 Military Wirebound Crate can withstand over 10 metric tons of compression and is used by the US government for military air-drops. This incredible strength is mostly attributable to the binding wire design. The wire simply provides tremendous strength to the vertical members of the crate as well as lateral pressure from the contents of the crate.
Nehalem Pacific's wirebound production line is retrofitted with a servomotor system and can produce upwards to 5,000 small/medium size wirebound crates per shift.
Due to the ability to mass produce wirebound crates, production labor input cost, as a percentage of the total cost of production, is minimal. Furthermore, the advantage of using binding wire allows Nehalem Pacific to vary the type and amount of material used in a crate. In other words, Nehalem Pacific has the flexibility to choose the most suitable type and thickness of wood substrate whereby performance is optimized and material cost minimized. This is not possible with traditional wooden crates. Wirebound crating materials can range from heavy duty lumber to thin veneer, or a combination of them depending on the application, all bound together by high tensile strength 2-3mm steel wire.
Assembly of wirebound crates is extremely simple. A customer can assemble a wirebound crate using 1 worker in less than 1 minute using no tools (1-1-0)! And, because wire is used in place of other fasteners, thinner wood panels can be used for the crating sides, thus saving big on a crate's largest material cost.
