He specialized in textiles, this business aptly named M.H.Joosub & Sons. Amongst his many customers was President PaulKruger.M.H. Joosub was blessed with three sons, one of which was HajeeJoosub Hajee Mahomed (the father of Solly Hajee Joosub currentManaging Director of J&E). Hajee Joosub ran his fathersbusiness very successfully, and at the same time, in 1945, startedJ&E Wholesalers in Prinsloo Street, Pretoria. At that time,Hajee Joosub controlled three businesses, namely M.H. Joosub &Sons, J&E Wholesalers (Pty) Ltd and J&B Trading inJohannesburg.Hajee Joosub passed away in 1963. This is when Solly Joosub, withhis brother Sikander inherited J&E Wholesalers. When SikanderHajee Joosub migrated to Durban a few years later, Solly Joosubtook full and complete control of J&E.Even as a young boy, he worked many long hours in J&E under hisfathers supervision, thus when Hajee Joosub passed on, Solly Joosubat a young age could command control of the business. In 1972, a much larger entity by the name of S. Cohen was acquiredby J&E under the directorship of Solly Joosub. S. Cohen, whoalso specialized in the FMCG market, was a natural and strategictakeover. S. Cohen then became the new premises of J&EWholesalers (Pty) Ltd., at 70-80 Du Toit Street, Pretoria. In 1973, Solly Hajee Joosub, along with 3 other founders, started acompany by the name of Shield Buying and Marketing, this was agreat success story as many disadvantaged Independent wholesalers(including J&E) could purchase goods through this buying groupand could compete favorably against the giants of the time. ShieldBuying Group listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1987, andSolly Joosub was amongst the first non-white executives to own acompany on the JSE. Later on, in 1992, Shield was purchased by theMassmart Group, and now falls under the umbrella of Walmart /Massmart.Due to all the violence and instability of 1986 in South Africa,Solly Joosub made a strategic decision to transform J&E from aconventional business of carrying accounts and delivering stock, toa Cash n Carry. This, with the will of the ALMIGHTY was aresounding success. With the change to Cash n Carry, the Du Toit Street premises wasproving too small, so in 1992 J&E acquired and moved to thecurrent premises on WF Nkomo Street (ex-Church Street), PretoriaWest, and these premises were consequently extended in 2005.Solly Hajee Joosub is still the head of J&E today, with his 3sons Mahomed, Adam and Shabir who effectively control theday-to-day operations. The success of four generations of the Joosub family can only beattributed to the ALMIGHTY who has been very kind in showing us thepath to success, integrity, morality, hard work and honesty. Wepray that He continues to pave that path for us and for futuregenerations.
