WHAT IS QUARTZ?

Quartz has always been a mineral that has attracted attention from the earliest of times; The term "quartz" itself is derived from the German word "Quarz," which ultimately corresponds to the Czech term tvrdý ("hard"). The name quartz was first used by Georgius Agricola, German Humanist scholar, mineralogist, and metallurgist, in 1530.

Silicon (Si) does not occur in a free state in nature, but its compounds are extraordinarily abundant and constitute about 28 percent of the Earth's crust.  The oxide quartz and the 'Great Group' of silicates are the most important rock-forming minerals. Silica (SiO2) occurs in the form of Quartz (crystalline form), chalcedony, agate, flint, and jasper (cryptocrystalline form), and opal (the hydrous form; Quartz is the second most abundant mineral among the Earth's crust after feldspar.  Quartz commonly occurs in nearly all acid igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. Of all non-metallic minerals, Quartz or silica has the most diversified use because of its common occurrence worldwide, distinctive physical characteristics such as hardness, chemical, heat resistance, and low price. One of the first industries to use Quartz or silica sand was the glass industry. At least 4,000 years ago, long before glassmakers smelted the iron, glass-making was already a known craft.

Quartz is colorless, transparent, and resistant to weathering and alterations. Devoid of cleavage, it breaks with irregular fracture. The luster is vitreous and occasionally resinous. Hardness is seven on Moh's scale, and specific gravity is about 2.65. Quartz crystals of pure, untwined, clear, and transparent varieties possess piezoelectric properties.

Quartz is an oxide of silicon. It is one of the common minerals in the Earth's crust, forming a greater part of sandstone and quartzite and sand of the seashore and river valleys. It is also found in nature as a hydrothermal deposit in veins and fissures in all types of acid igneous rocks. The range of Quartz found naturally is extensive - this includes a pure form of the mineral such as Rock Crystal and Vein Quartz which are primarily associated with acid igneous bodies. The secondary or residual products consist of the consolidated rocks such as quartzites, the metamorphosed form, and the sandstones, the sedimentary form.  All of our mines have pure vein-quartz associated with the pegmatites.

In India, Quartz deposits occur primarily in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu – these three states contribute to about 64% of India's total production.  Promoters of 'India Quartz' owns and operates mines in all these states, making us position uniquely for wide range of industrial customers.
