About Dolomite:
The mineral dolomite is a combination of the elements calcium, magnesium, carbon and oxygen. Chemically, it is a calcium, magnesium carbonate. A large number of other elements may substitute for the calcium and magnesium and varieties containing iron, manganese, cobalt, lead and zinc are known. When a large amount of iron is present, the mineral ankerite forms and when excess manganese is present the mineral kutnahorite forms instead of dolomite. All these minerals have the same internal structure, but differ chemically from each other. This is known as an isomorphous series of minerals. The ideal composition of dolomite is:
CaO (Calcium oxide) 30.41%
MgO (Magnesium oxide) 21.86%
CO2 (Carbon dioxide) 47.73%
The specific gravity of dolomite is 2.85. The hardness of dolomite is 4 on the Mohs hardness scale.
